Gran Premio José Pedro Ramírez

The Hipódromo de Maroñas is a horse racing track located in the Uruguayan capital Montevideo , in the district ( barrio ) Maroñas .

Opened in 1874 under the original name of Circo de Ituizaingó , the racetrack was built by residents of British origin in what is now the Montevidean district of Ituzaingó on the former lands of Francisco Maroñas , a Spaniard of Gallic origin who was naturalized in the Banda Oriental . Because of this, it quickly became known as the Circo de Maroñas .

It has a main track of 2,065 m in length and an additional 2,000 m long track for training purposes. The audience capacity with 2,426 seats and around 5,500 standing places is just under 8,000 spectators. The hippodrome also offers parking for 697 cars. The Folle Ylla (1938) and Local Tribuna (1945) grandstands are the work of architect Román Fresnedo Siri . In 2003 the hippodrome reopened after years of inactivity. In 2006 and 2018, the hippodrome hosted the Gran Premio Latinoamericano , an important Group I race in South America.

The most important event is the Gran Premio José Pedro Ramírez , held annually on January 6th .
