Hiroaki Kitano

Hiroaki Kitano ( Japanese 北野 宏 明 , Kitano Hiroaki ; * 1961 in Tokyo Prefecture ) is a Japanese computer scientist and systems biologist . He is the developer of Aibo and the two-legged robot Qrio and founder of the RoboCup competitions (1997).

Kitano studied physics at the International Christian University in Tokyo with a bachelor's degree in 1984 and received his doctorate in computer science from the University of Kyoto in 1991 (dissertation: Speech-to-speech translation: a massively parallel memory-based approach ). From 1984 to 1993 he was at the NEC software research laboratory and from 1988 to 1994 he was a visiting scientist at the Center for Machine Translation at Carnegie Mellon University . From 1993 he was at the Sony Laboratories for Computer Science, where he became Senior Researcher in 1996 and became its President in 2002.

He is Disease Modeling Group Leader at the RIKEN Center for Integrative Medical Sciences and has been Director of the Systems Biology Institute in Tokyo since 2001.

From 1997 to 2000 he was visiting professor at Tokyo Medical and Dental University , from 1998 to 2001 visiting professor at the National Institute of Genetics in Mishima, since 2001 visiting professor in the Faculty of Biology at Keiō University and since 2007 visiting professor at RCAST ( University of Tokyo ) .

In 1993 he received the IJCAI Computers and Thought Award .
