Hiroaki Mitsuya
Hiroaki Mitsuya (* 1950 in Sasebo ) is a Japanese virologist who was involved in the development of the HIV drug azidothymidine (AZT).
Mitsuya studied medicine at Kumamoto University, where he also received his doctorate (MD, Ph.D.) and received specialist training in oncology, hematology and immunology. From 1982 he worked as a virologist at the National Cancer Institute (NC), where he soon developed the HIV drug AZT with Samuel Broder and Robert Yarchoan . The original identification (1985) of AZT as effective against HIV in the systematic test of known antivirals comes from him. He also developed the necessary in vitro test system with human T cells as target cells for the virus. Since 1991 he has headed the experimental retrovirology department at the NCI. He was also a professor at Kumamoto University.
He was also involved in the development of the HIV drugs didanosine and zalcitabine .
In 2007 Mitsuya received the Keio Medical Science Prize and in 2014 the Asahi Prize .
