history

St. Thomas Church

The first written mention of Hirschzell is in 839 as Herilescella. A mission cell of the Stöttwang monastery, which belonged to the Kempten monastery, is believed to have originated .

From the middle of the 12th century to the 14th century there is evidence of a Guelph family of Hirschzell servants, who had their castle seat on the castle hill to the southeast above the town. Until 1535 the place was under the Kemnat family of Benzenau , before Simprecht von Benzenau sold the place to Jakob von Kaltental . The Augsburg patrician family of the Rehlinger family also sold their shares in Hirschzell in 1535 to the Augsburg canon Kaspar von Kaltental , after Dorothea von Rehlingen zu Haldenberg initiated the founding of a branch of the Augsburg Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine in 1521. In the parish church of St. Thomas , two stones remind of Dorothea von Rehlingen and her mother Barbara Schweikart.

From the purchases, Jakob von Kaltental zu Mühlhausen am Neckar formed the rule Osterzell, which in addition to Hirschzell also included Tremmelschwang and Osterzell and was sold to the Rottenbuch monastery by the last baron of Kaltental in 1699 . The place remained in his possession until the secularization in 1802.

In the course of the regional reform, Hirschzell was incorporated into the city of Kaufbeuren on the basis of an incorporation agreement from May 17, 1972 to July 1, 1972.

coat of arms

The split coat of arms on the left with a sloping bar adorned with three golden balls refers to the Benzenau family , who were the lords of Hirschzell for some time. The right part, a green leafy tree on a green shield base, stands for the Rottenbuch monastery.

economy

At the beginning of the 18th century there were around 30 agricultural properties in Hirschzell. As in the entire Allgäu, flax was grown in Hirschzell, which was processed in the nearby textile town of Kaufbeuren. With the introduction of the cheese dairy in the 19th century, most of the businesses switched to dairy farming.

Today the place is mainly characterized by agriculture and small businesses.

In Hirschzell is the former headquarters and nucleus of Georg Jos. Kaes GmbH . The first C&C store , today V-Markt , was opened in Hirschzell in 1963 . The market still exists, but apart from the larger V-markets in Kaufbeuren, it is only of local importance. The company headquarters and the central warehouse were relocated to nearby Mauerstetten in the 1990s .

Volunteer firefighter

The Hirschzell volunteer fire brigade remained as an independent fire brigade with its own commander and association even after the incorporation. In addition to a fire fighting group vehicle, a special vehicle of the type MAN L26, built in 2001, is stationed in Hirschzell, which provides two one-person shower tents with water heating for personal decontamination.
