Histiophryne psychedelica is a frogfish (Antennariidae)newly described in 2009. The description is based on three specimens, the holotype is an 87 mm long male that wascaughtat a depth of 6.5 meters, 20 meters from the shore near the city of Ambon on the island of the same name in Indonesia . The paratypes are a 65 mm long male and a 76 mm long female, both of which werecaughtnear Bali .

etymology

The type epithet psychedelica was awarded because the colors of the fish should resemble the sensations of a psychedelic intoxication.

features

Head study

Histiophryne psychedelica has a flattened head, which appears very broad due to the fleshy, enlarged chin and cheek region. The eyes point straight ahead. The trunk is short, high and slightly flattened on the sides. The skin is thick and loose. The mouth is upright to vertical. It is small compared to the mouths of other armfinches . Two to four irregular rows of brush-like, small teeth sit in the mouth. The eyes are 3.2 to 3.6% of the standard length in diameter. The hard-rayed part of the dorsal fin consists of three widely separated fin rays. The first, the "Illicium" is tiny.

Fin formula : dorsal 13, anal 7, pectoral 8, ventral I / 5, caudal 9

The basic color of Histiophryne psychedelica is yellow-brown to peach-colored. Starting radially from the eyes, a more or less intertwined pattern of narrow white stripes, bluish in the middle, extends over the head, trunk and to the ends of the fins. The color is a mimicry of the hard coral Leptoseris explanata .

habitat

All specimens found and observed so far were in a water depth of 5 to 7 meters. At Ambon, near a port, the site was covered with coral fragments and rubbish and overgrown with sponges , colonial sea squirts and calcareous algae . Around a dozen other specimens were observed near Bali, where the paratypes were found, all of which kept a distance of around 40 meters. These included juveniles and a brood-tending female. The relatively large (3–4 mm) and few (about 220) eggs are connected by filaments and form a lump that is hidden by the female by enclosing it with body and fins.
