The big- eared bats ( Histiotus ) are a species of bat in the smooth-nosed family (Vespertilionidae). The species live in South America.

With a head-to-trunk length of 48 to 70 mm and a weight of 11 to 14 g, these bats are medium-sized representatives of the family. The tail length is 39 to 55 mm, the forearms are 42 to 52 mm long. The fur is predominantly brown in color with dark, gray, or white shades. In some individuals, the underside is light gray. The morphology of the teeth and skull corresponds to that of the broad-winged bats ( Eptesicus ). The Histiotus species, on the other hand, have significantly larger ears. In Histiotus macrotus, these are connected by a strip of skin.

These bats are found in different habitats. Some prefer forests, others are native to the mountains. They use crevices and buildings as resting places, where smaller groups form. Adult males were rarely found in groups with lactating females. A litter usually consists of a young animal that becomes sexually mature after about a year.

The following species belong to the genus.
