The historical library of the city of Rastatt is a former grammar school library, which today as a publicly accessible library is directly owned by the city of Rastatt . It is located in the Ludwig-Wilhelm-Gymnasium, where it served as the teacher's library.

history

Today's high school was built in the 18th century for the Piarist College founded in 1715 . The book holdings of the Piarist School were merged in 1808 with the library of the lyceum that had emerged from the Jesuit college in Baden-Baden . Since 1908 the school has been called Ludwig-Wilhelm-Gymnasium. With the renaming in 1991 in "Historical Library of the city of Rastatt in the Ludwig-Wilhelm Gymnasium" the book collection was released from the ownership of the school and the city as a museum old portfolio acquired library. She is currently being looked after by a full-time librarian.

"As a former school library, the historical library of the city of Rastatt is now one of the five most important collections of its kind in Germany," says the institution's website. Around 40 manuscripts, some of them medieval, over 160 incunabula , many valuable prints from the early modern period , and an almost unique collection of Baden school programs contribute to this rank. In 1993, 9,422 titles (before 1900) were counted in approx. 18,000 volumes for the manual of historical book collections.

Only in Rastatt is there an edition of Hans Ortenstein's Fräulein von Britannien , probably printed in 1492 by the Zweibrücken printer Jörg Geßler.

The holdings cataloged in the Südwestverbund are only increased slightly.

The library is entered in the monuments book of the state of Baden-Württemberg.
