Historical newspaper library

The Historical Newspaper Library , officially Finnish sanomalehtikirjasto Historiallinen is one of the Digitization Center of the Finnish National Library by run joint Nordic project Retrodigitization historical Finnish newspapers . Are involved in addition to the National Library , the university libraries of the University of Turku , the University of Jyväskylä , the Åbo Akademi , the University of Oulu and the University of Eastern Finland .

Duration

Since the beginning of the century, most of the newspapers and magazines published in Finland between 1771 and 1920, for which the copyright had expired, had been digitized. In 2008, 165 newspaper titles with 800,000 digitized pages were available. The scope of digitization has since been expanded by the Ministry of Education until the end of the 19th century and further into the 20th century. As of 2017, 500 historical newspapers with over 2.9 million pages by 1920 have already been digitized, depending on the respective inventory. Not every title is available in its entirety in Finnish libraries, so there can be gaps within a newspaper.

The total volume of the scans processed in the digital collections of the Finnish National Library was over ten million pages in February 2016, over 12.5 million in 2017 and over 13 million pages in March 2018.

The publications in the newspaper library can be freely selected and read in the online service user interface. User interfaces are in English, Swedish and Finnish. In addition to browsing , text searches can also be performed, e.g. B. with the so-called fuzzy search (fuzzy search). It is also possible to print journals in a high quality PDF file or to cite references in multiple bibliographic formats. They are also available through Europeana .
