The Putzger Historical World Atlas (short of Putzger ) is the most common historical atlas in Germany . It is also considered a standard work for history teaching beyond Germany.

history

The Historical School Atlas was published for the first time in Leipzig in 1877 . Its author was the secondary school teacher Friedrich Wilhelm Putzger .

Initially conceived as an affordable (and therefore quickly popular) school atlas for secondary school students from a modest background, it soon became a standard work for adults with an interest in history. In 1954 Putzger came to Cornelsen Verlag with the Velhagen und Klasing publishing house. The first completely revised post-war edition appeared in the same year. The Putzger is published today by Cornelsen Verlag in Berlin and came out in 2002 on the 125th anniversary with a large edition that surpasses the previous tradition both in terms of format and scope. With around 8.5 million copies sold, the "Putzger" has earned a reputation as a standard work of historical cartography far beyond schools and beyond Germany. In countries such as Switzerland, Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Israel and the USA, the Putzger has long been considered the standard work for historical atlases.

Others

In the 2007 editions for Bavaria and 2005 for Berlin (103rd edition) there is a fictitious entry with the title Hobbiton , a fictional city from the novel The Lord of the Rings , as a historical event , the "Murder Sarumans, the former leader of the White Council ”. Furthermore, reference is made to a map of Central Europe, on which you can actually find Hobbiton roughly on today's border between Austria and Slovenia. Rivendell is also hidden in the register and on a map. So to map reading not only be learned with a wink, but also showed that information must not vote just because it stands in a textbook.
