Historic town hall in Wolgast

The historic Wolgast town hall is a plastered building from the beginning of the 18th century. The listed building is one of the landmarks of the city of Wolgast in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district in the German state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . After most of the city's administrations moved to the Technical Town Hall , it is mainly used for representative and tourist purposes.

history

A previous building was probably built in the 14th century. The medieval town hall was destroyed in city fires in 1512 and 1628. The last destruction took place in 1713 during the Great Northern War when Russian troops burned Volgast. The reconstruction took place in the period from 1718 to 1724 on the ground plan and using remnants of the destroyed previous building. A council meeting took place in the building as early as 1722. During this time, the town hall received its present appearance, except for the lantern erected in 1780 .

In addition to the council chamber, the building contained the city archives, council scales and a prison. There were two halls on the upper floor. The Ratsweinkeller was housed in the basement. In addition, the cellar master and the municipal scales had their apartments in the town hall. In 1826 the police were housed in the former council chamber on the ground floor. One of the two halls on the upper floor was set up as the council chamber from 1826 to 1829.

In the years 1999 to 2000 the historic town hall was extensively renovated. The registry office, the cultural office and the city information office remained in the building, while the other administrative offices moved to the Technical Town Hall on Burgstrasse.

Location and description

Fountain in front of the town hall

The Wolgast town hall is the central building of the Rathausplatz, a former market square of the city. With its market gable it points in the direction of the Petrikirche in Wolgast . In front of the gable is a fountain, the 10 reliefs of which depict scenes from the city's history. The fountain from 1936 is a work by Kurt Beer. From the rear facade of the town hall, Kleinbrückenstraße leads directly to the harbor and the castle island .

The town hall is a two-storey, free-standing plastered building with a three-axis gable facing the town hall square (market) and seven-axis sides. The facade of the curved pediment market is by graded buttresses and cranked floor cornices divided. On the back there are side pillar-like reinforcements. A pilaster structure on the rear gable is the remainder of the late Gothic dazzling decoration. The gable roof is equipped with dormers .
