Hitachiyama Taniemon ( Japanese 常 陸 山 谷 右 エ 門 ; * January 19, 1874 in what is now Mito , Ibaraki Prefecture as Ichige Tani ( 市 毛 谷 ); † June 19, 1922 in Honjo, Sumida ) was an important Japanese sumo wrestler at the beginning of the 20th century and 19th yokozuna .
Hitachiyama was the eldest son of a vassal of Mito - han born in the time of the shogunate the ruling Tokugawa had been close -Clan. He began his career in 1891 as a wrestler for Dewanoumi-Beya and was promoted to yokozuna in 1903.
Between August 1907 and March 1908 Hitachiyama visited the USA with some students , where they gave a performance for Theodore Roosevelt in the White House . Three wrestlers remained in the United States at the end of the trip.
Hitachiyama was one of the most successful wrestlers of his time for years and did not abdicate until 1914.
After his playing days, Hitachiyama led the Dewanoumi-Beya as stable master. Under his aegis, Tochigiyama , whom he had promoted from the start, achieved the highest dignity in sumo. The stable also took in its first foreign student, John Kentel.
Hitachiyama is buried in the Yanaka Cemetery in Tokyo.
