The Cathedral Church of the Holy Tsar Uros ( Albanian  Katedralja e Shën Uroshit , Serbian Саборна црква Светог Цара Уроша Saborna crkva svetog cara Urosa ) in the center of the Kosovo town of Ferizaj belongs to the Eparchy of Raška and Prizren of the Serbian Orthodox Church . According to UNESCO reports from 2004 and 2005, the church is of great religious and symbolic importance as it contains valuable decorations and artifacts; However, the design and historical value should be classified as low.

It is located right next to the Mulla Veseli Mosque , which is considered a symbol of tolerance between Albanian Muslims and Orthodox Serbs in the city. The building complex of the cathedral and mosque is protected as a cultural monument.

Building history

The building is dedicated to the Holy Tsar Stefan Uroš V and was built between 1929 and 1933 by Josif Mihailović, an architect from the Macedonian capital Skopje . It was built with five domes on the plan of a three pass . Concrete, stone and bricks were used to make it, and it was paved over . The Gračanica Monastery served as a model for the upper part of the church. The dome decoration consists of checkerboard patterns , floral motifs and bricks. The main dome stands on four pillars.

The walls were painted from 1932 to 1936 by Janko Kuzmanović from Galičnik , who together with Viktorija Puzanova from Mitrovica carved the three icons and the iconostasis . The icon collection belongs to the Serbian Middle Ages, including the Trinity icon by Josif Radević from Lazaropolje from 1896. The wooden iconostasis dates from the 19th century and was a gift from the Serbian King Alexander I Karađorđević .

Modern history

In late June 1999 and December 2003 the church was attacked by Albanian extremists. During the riots in Kosovo in 2004 there were protests by Albanians in Ferizaj as well. On the evening of March 17th, the initially peaceful protest turned into violence, which was then directed against the Serbian cathedral. The Greek soldiers present on site were relieved by US troops late in the evening , after which the situation calmed down again. The KFOR troops were able to prevent rioters from entering the church, so that only the entrance area of the St. Uroš Cathedral suffered fire damage.

In January 2013, graffiti was sprayed on the cathedral. In April of the same year construction began in the courtyard of the cathedral for a parsonage, into which the bishop Živojin Kojić is to move.
