history

The construction of the Church of St. Mark began in 1898 on the initiative of the village priest of the Dobrić Parish Damnjan Vujković , to which the village of Varna also belonged.

The free-standing bell tower

He had already collected the first funds for church building by dividing the parish property. A dissatisfied parishioner shot at priest Vujković, who became blind from the consequences of the wounds. His successor Stevan Karanović bought the building site in 1900.

The construction of the church began in 1903. The son of the priest Damnjan Vujković , Nenad Vujković , also a priest, continued building the church. In 1911, the church was completed in August 1911 by the bishop of that diocese Šabac- Valjevo , Sergije (Georgijević) , inaugurated. A free-standing bell tower with two church bells was built in the immediate vicinity of the church.

The church bells were stolen during the First World War (1914–1918). The church was set on fire by Austro-Hungarian soldiers and extinguished by soldiers of the second mobilization of the Timok division of the Serbian army.

The church and the rectory in Varna

It was solemnly rededicated on May 8, 1932 by the bishop of the Šabac-Valjevo eparchy, Mihailo (Urošević) . The rectory was built in 1940 when Varna became the seat of an independent parish. From 2016 to 2018 the church underwent an exterior and interior renovation.
