Hobbit Day

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hobbit Day (translated: Hobbit Day ) is that since 1978 every year on an unofficial holiday on September 22 in honor of the birthdays of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins , two characters from JRR Tolkien's famous novels The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings , is celebrated .

history

The Hobbit Day was founded in 1978 by the American Tolkien Society initiated. You started this day as part of Tolkien Week. Thus the Hobbit Day is the oldest holiday or memorial day from this fandom . On the part of official bodies in the United States , this day is widely accepted, which for this reason also distinguishes it significantly from the other Tolkien public holiday ( Tolkien Reading Day ).

According to both novels ( The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings ), the birthday of both protagonists and hobbits Bilbo Baggins and his nephew Frodo Baggins falls on September 22nd (Bilbo 2890 and Frodo 2968 in the third age of Middle-earth and 1290 and 1368 after the Shire -Reckoning calendar, also known as the Shire calendar). In the Lord of the Rings trilogy , preparations for the celebrations of this double birthday can be seen at the beginning.

The Shire-Reckoning calendar and the Gregorian calendar are up to ten days apart, depending on the month. So the real birthday would be between September 12th and 14th. That is why there is a dispute in the fan base about when to celebrate the day. For this reason, some fans celebrate Hobbit Day on September 14th.

In addition to the double birthday, Hobbit Day also has another anniversary. The English original The Hobbit, or There and Back Again appeared in its first edition on September 21, 1937 and was sold one day later, on September 22.

solemnity

There are no precise guidelines on how to celebrate this day. But, as already mentioned above, the preparation of the double birthday is shown at the beginning of the trilogy. This celebration consisted of a big party with food, fireworks, dancing and lots of fun. Some Tolkien fans hold parties or festivals similar to hobbit parties on this day.

It is also common to run barefoot all day and eat seven meals. Some turn binge-watch the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies or read the books.
