The St. Petersburg Elevated Railway ( Russian Надзе́мный экспре́сс - Nadsemny Ekspress , literally High Express ) was a planned light rail system for the Russian city ​​of Saint Petersburg . It was originally intended to open in parts from around 2011 to supplement the city's existing metro network . The construction plans for the elevated railway have since been put on hold.

The Petersburger Hochbahn is intended as a comparatively inexpensive, yet equivalent alternative to certain, long-planned, but still unrealized underground lines due to lack of money. In particular, the construction of the elevated railway is intended to close gaps in the public transport connections between different areas on the outskirts, as the metro connects the outskirts with the city center, but has so far hardly had any cross connections between outskirts. In addition, the suburb of Peterhof and Pulkowo Airport will later be linked to the city's high-speed transport network by an elevated railway connection. According to plans, the short and medium-term construction projects for the metro should remain unaffected by the planned construction of the elevated railway.

The system

From a technical point of view, the planned elevated railway is a high-speed transport system that is comparable to a city ​​railway , and in some cases also to an S-Bahn or U-Bahn . Most of the route is to run on specially built elevated viaducts and thus be completely free of crossings (similar to the Butovskaya line of the Moscow Metro ), although a few stops at ground level are also planned. It has not yet been determined which vehicle types will be used on the Petersburg elevated railway, but the electricity will be drawn off via an overhead line due to sections of ground level .

The first construction phase begins west of the Sosnowaja Poljana district on Petershofer Chaussee. A large new district is currently being developed here. The route leads from here over the Ulitsa Pionerstroja to the south and then over the Prospekt Weteranow to the metro station of the same name. The most important transfer point of the line will be here. The entire south-western urban area is connected to the metro network at this stop . So far, these younger residential areas have only had tram connections and marshrutki and bus connections to the metro. However, these modes of transport are very slow due to the high traffic density. A new metro line in the southwest is not planned until around 2025. The route leads south-east over the Datschny Prospect and reaches the Datschnoje station . There is a connection to the suburban and regional trains of the railway. The route continues a little further to the southeast and then to the east to the extended Dunajski Prospect. There is also the option of later building a branch to the nearby Pulkowo Airport . Along the Dunajski Prospect, the metro stations Svjosdnaja and Kuptschino can be reached and further to the east the metro and regional train station Obuchowo . This planning variant is 21 km long. A total of 21 stations are planned.

Preparations for the construction work on the first construction phase were made in 2008. It was originally supposed to go into operation in late 2010 or early 2011. An extension of the route to the west past the Constantine Palace to the Strelna regional train station could be implemented in parallel. This extension has a length of about 6 km. A continuation of the route to the nearby district of Petrodworez and the Peterhof Park is possible without much effort.

A private investor is also to be determined by means of a competition to operate the route. The city is negotiating this with the world's leading manufacturers of rail vehicles: Siemens , Bombardier , Škoda , Alstom , Mitsui and Dedal .

In addition to this route, a second variant was considered in the general plan of the city of Saint Petersburg, drawn up in 2005. It should begin at the same point in order to be able to be extended to the west as well. However, to the east, a northern route should be led across Leninsky Prospect to the metro station of the same name, Krasnoputilowskaya Ulitsa and Ploshchad Pobedy, Ulitsa Ordzhonikidze, Uliza Dimitrova and Bukharestskaya Ulitsa to Dunajski Prospect and on to Obuchowo. The length of the route roughly corresponds to the variant chosen. Against this variant, however, spoke that fewer metro stations are reached and, above all, that the variant that is now to be implemented has more construction freedom. The planned route leads largely through undeveloped areas or over already very broad streets. It also enables easy access to the airport.

The second phase is to lead parallel with the railway to the north Obukhovo and near the metro station Jelisarowskaja Bolshoi Smolensky Prospekt the most on a new bridge Neva cross. The Prospekt Bolsheviks metro station can also be reached via Uliza Kolpontai . This stage with a length of 11 km was planned for around 2015.

In the long term, the route is to be run from here in a northerly direction via Industrialny-Prospect, parallel to the railroad through the Rutschi district to the Graschdanski-Prospekt metro station and further west via Prosweschtschenija Prospect, through the Oserki and Schuwalowo districts to the planned new building areas on north end of Komendantski Prospect. With these 26 kilometers of route, a half-ring would be created along the northern, eastern and southern borders of the actual urban area of ​​Saint Petersburg.

Suspension of the project

As a result of, among other things , the financing difficulties caused by the international economic crisis , but also because of the controversial routing for the city's monument protection, it was announced again and again from 2009 that the original completion dates could not be met. Finally, in October 2009, the city council announced that the project would now be frozen for an indefinite period.
