from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A high-rise fire in Osaka resulted in deaths on December 17, 2021. The fire occurred in the morning on the fourth floor of an eight-story skyscraper in the Sonezaki Shinchi district in the Kita-ku district in the center of the Japanese metropolis of Osaka .

A fire report was received by the city fire department at around 10:20 a.m. According to official information, a large part of the fire could be extinguished within 30 minutes. A total of more than 70 fire engines were in use. "Cardiac and respiratory arrest" was initially diagnosed in 27 people, including 17 men and 10 women. However, three men could be resuscitated, so that the number of victims is 24 people. A woman was rescued from the sixth floor with minor injuries.

The cause is arson suspected. According to some information from the police, a 60-year-old man is said to have spilled liquid from a paper bag next to a heater at the scene of the accident. A security check of the 1970s building two years earlier reportedly showed no fire protection deficiencies. The building where the fire broke out is on the south side of JR Kitashinchi Station, across from a busy street. On the fourth floor there was a clinic (Japanese働 く 人 の 西梅 田 こ こ ろ と か ら だ の ク リ ニ ッ ク Hataraku Hito no Nishi-Umeda Kokoro to Karada no Kurinikku , German 'Workers Clinic West- Umeda for body and mind' ) providing psychiatric and general medical care bot.

The major fire has been the largest such disaster in Japan since the arson attack on Kyoto Animation in July 2019, with 36 fatalities. Also in Osaka, there was another arson attack on a video library in 2008 , killing 16 people.
