National Defense College (Thailand)

The University of National Defense ( Thai วิทยาลัย ป้องกัน ราช อาณาจักร , RTGS : Ratcha Witthayalai Pongkan-anachak; Engl .: National Defense College of Thailand) is an educational institution for higher officers of the Thai armed forces and civilians in Bangkok .

The Thai National Defense College was established on February 2, 1955 at the instigation of Field Marshal Plaek Phibulsongkram . It is operated by the top staff of the Thai armed forces. It is located in the Thanon Vibhavadi Rangsit in Bangkok's Din Daeng district .

Well-known former students

Since its inception, the college graduates have had a major impact on both the military and the political realms of the kingdom. Among the most famous former students are:

  • Field Marshal Thanom Kittikachorn , Prime Minister 1958 and 1963–73 (final year 1)
  • Professor Sanya Dharmasakti , Prime Minister 1973-75 (Graduating Class 1)

  • General Sonthi Boonyaratglin , Supreme Commander of the Army 2005-07, leader of the military junta ("National Security Council") 2006 (graduating class 42)
  • General Saprang Kalayanamit , Assistant to the Commander-in-Chief of the Army, General Secretary of the "National Security Council" 2006-07 (final year 43)
