Flood hazard map

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Flood risk maps are special cartographic and spatial planning works for recording the flood risk . They have been gradually built up since around the 19th century with the onset of major river regulations and in coastal protection , and have been digitized and embedded in geographic information systems since the 1990s . Flood hazard maps show the extensive extent of the flooding, the possible water depths and, if necessary, the corresponding flow velocities - each depending on the water level. In the European Union , the member states are obliged to create such maps according to the Flood Risk Management Directive .

National

Germany

Flood hazard maps have been created in Germany by the federal states since around the beginning of the 21st century in order to be able to identify possible hazards from floods of different strengths on plan maps. They are instruments of spatial planning , land use and land-use planning ; also of course flood and disaster risk management .

Austria

The flood risk zoning Austria (HORA) was created from 2007 and has been freely accessible online as eHORA since 2011.
