The Hunsrück Wildlife Protection Park is a wildlife park on the northern outskirts of Rheinböllen in the Hunsrück .
history
founding
On July 8, 1967, the game reserve was opened to the public for the first time. The entrepreneur Anton Schulte-Wrede from the Sauerland had laid out the site. Numerous animals that are native to the region or once were, including lynxes , wolves , bears and wild boars, live on an area of almost 100 hectares . The gate fences were around 20 kilometers in length, the hiking trails at that time were 3 kilometers, the entire area was around 100 hectares of forest and 3 hectares of water. More than 100,000 visitors per year were counted as a result.
Deer , fallow deer , mouflon and wild boar belonged from the start as the park as Capricorn and European bison or elk . Forest nature trails, bird protection plans and observation pulpits were not only popular with guests interested in photography, but also with local foresters and hunters. In addition, picnic areas were already inviting people to rest. The wildlife sanctuary not only attracted interested laypeople and animal lovers from near and far, but also a specialist audience. The animal researcher Bernhard Grzimek visited Rheinböllen's wildlife park as early as October 1967 .
modernization
The park was modernized from 1998 to 2010. Among other things, the bear enclosure was expanded. The falconry was founded in 2006 and offers a daily bird of prey show .
A special feature of the park is that several animal species can move freely in the park, mainly roe deer , fallow deer and sika deer , as well as mouflon .
Lease extension
The park has been managed by Wolfgang Kaus since 2008, he runs it together with Kristof Fröhlich. The long-term continuation of the park is assured: In 2015, the lease agreement between the operators and the landowners, the city of Rheinböllen and the municipalities of Erbach and Liebshausen, was extended by a further 25 years - until 2040.
Memberships
The game park is a member of the German Game Reserve Association
