Hock is the English name for German white wine from the Rhine. The term is used almost exclusively for export wines in the low price range. Despite the broad definition, there is a strong connotation to the Riesling grape variety in English .
The name is derived from the wine of the city of Hochheim am Main in the 17th century . The Hochheimer origins changed from the now outdated hockamore to hock . When Queen Victoria's visit to Hochheim in 1845, the term was already well established. Because of the good taste of the Hochheimer wines and the health benefits attributed to them, the saying established itself: A good Hock keeps off the doc!
In honor of Queen Victoria, the vineyard she visited bears the name Hochheimer Königin Viktoriaberg (see in particular Queen Viktoriaberg # origin of name and history ). The Queen Victoria monument erected in the vineyard attests to the visit and the naming .
In the 18th century this became a term for German white wine in general. The modifications red hock and sparcling hock were also common.
