Otto Jaag (born April 29, 1900 in Guntmadingen (Canton SH), † July 31, 1978 in Zurich ) was a Swiss botanist and hydrobiologist and long-time director of Eawag .

Biography and research areas

From 1921 to 1924 he was a teacher at the school in Beringen SH . Jaag completed his doctorate with Robert Hippolyte Chodat in Geneva. In 1933 he completed his habilitation at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH Zurich). In 1941 he became adjunct professor, in 1945 associate professor for special botany and in 1963 full professor for hydrology, wastewater treatment and water protection at the ETH Zurich. In 1970 he retired.

From 1952 to 1970 he was director of Eawag (at that time still written EAWAG, for "Federal Institute for Water Supply, Wastewater Treatment and Water Protection"). He was considered one of the most important and influential hydrobiologists in Europe. Jaag dealt in a narrower scientific sense with hydrobiology (which he and his time in Switzerland often referred to as hydrology ), cryptogamics, plant pathology and botany . His interests, however, extended over numerous theoretical and applied areas from waste research to questions relating to the systematics of cyanobacteria (then called blue-green algae).

Public and political importance

Jaag recognized the importance of comprehensive water and environmental protection early on and made a significant contribution to research in this area for decades. He was a member of numerous national and international organizations and commissions dedicated to water protection. As director of Eawag for many years, he succeeded in laying not only scientific but also political foundations for water protection . He was an honorary member of the Schaffhausen Natural Research Society .
