The Hoferkopfturm was a lookout tower built in 1931 by the Saarwaldverein Bildstock in the city of Friedrichsthal in Saarland . Until its demolition in 1972 it was the symbol of the wayside shrine .

location

The Hoferkopf tower stood on the summit of the Hoferkopf hill above the town of Friedrichsthal in the Bildstock district . Coordinates: 49 ° 19 ′ 54 ″  N , 7 ° 6 ′ 5 ″  E

view

The tower offered a panoramic view over the city of Friedrichsthal, far into the Sulzbachtal, as far as Saarbrücken . In good weather, the view extended to the Vosges in France .

architecture

Closed timber construction with individual viewing windows on the floors. The viewing platform on the top floor was also closed and had a continuous band of windows all around. The height of the tower was 18 meters. He stood on a 3 meter high water tank, which was used as a foundation.

history

In order to create a panoramic view with all-round view of the city and at the same time a landmark, the Saarwaldverein Bildstock built a wooden observation tower on the Hoferkopf in 1931. Over the years it has become a symbol of the city.
Since the water storage tank used as a substructure was no longer stable due to damage to the pit, the Hoferkopf tower had to be demolished on March 4, 1972 by the Friedrichsthal Technical Relief Organization.

After 22 years without a tower, the THW Friedrichsthal again built a new Hoferkopf tower in 1994 in six months of voluntary work. The open half-timbered wooden tower with a height of almost 21 meters was built slightly offset from the original location because of the damage to the pit.
Because the new tower was now rotten in many places, it was closed to the public on November 28, 2013, and at the beginning of September 2014 the tower had to be demolished for security reasons.

Todays situation

Today the Förderverein Hoferkopfturm eV, with members from Friedrichsthal, Bildstock and Maybach, is committed to the reconstruction of a lookout tower. The new tower, based on the tower built in 1931, is to be built as a wooden structure. The necessary plans are still available. In contrast to the original, a loose transverse or longitudinal cladding is provided, with viewing platforms on each level. The tower version in wood construction described and proposed by the association has not yet been secured. At the instigation of the city council, an aluminum construction could also be implemented.
