The small village of Hoffnungsthal was founded in 1847 by German emigrants in South Australia about 70 km from Adelaide in the Barossa Valley . The place was destroyed as a result of a severe flooding in October 1853 and had to be abandoned.

214 immigrants, including 40 farmers and 14 miners, arrived in Port Adelaide , Australia on March 17, 1847 on the ship Heloise , which had been chartered by the South Australia Company and cast off in Bremen. The immigrants were of the Lutheran faith and 30 of them had decided to lease land in the Hoffnungsthal.

Within a short time, the new settlers had built huts there, turned around 200 acres into farmland and built a church in October. They settled in this area, although the Aborigines living there are said to have warned of floods. The place had 37 farmhouses with outbuildings, a church, school and a cemetery at its wedding.

The church, which was built on a raised ground and therefore withstood the flood, was used until 1867. The original settlement area was assigned to Gottlieb Miebus from November 14, 1862.

During the First World War the area was named Karrawirra and in 1975 it was renamed back to Hoffnungsthal.
