High Gate (Egypt)

High Gate (also Migdol)

The high gate is in front of the mortuary temple of Ramses III. in the south of Thebes-West near Medinet Habu . It is the entrance on the east side of this temple with a height of 19 meters. The gate is atypical for the Egyptian temple architecture of that time and could be influenced by Asian models. Two towers, which are crowned by battlements, and the adjoining masonry form the entrance passage. At the rear they are connected to each other by a double upper floor. The interiors were habitable and were used by the ruler for short stays.
