The Hohle Stein is a cave in Thuringia . It is located on the summit of the Schossberg, three kilometers north of the city center of Ruhla and 500 meters south of Scharfenberg Castle above the district of Thal .

description

Members of the Thuringian Cave Association e. V. , local group Wutha-Farnroda, entered and measured the cave in the summer of 1990.

The cave is located on the summit of the Schossberg and can be easily reached from Thal via signposted hiking trails. It is about 300 m away from the Glockenhaus Thal .

Visiting the cave is possible without aids, children and young people can crawl through the approximately 15 meter long corridor without any effort. The cave has two entrances: the eastern entrance is reached from the hiking trail via a few steps, the western entrance ends in the approximately three to five meter high flank of the rock.

Circular depressions on the rock bear witness to the fact that a wooden observation pavilion was built on this site in the late 19th century. It allowed an excellent view of the neighboring castle ruins. This view is now only possible in winter through the re-grown forest.

Several legends are linked to the place, and the Venedians are said to have stayed in the caves around Thal and Ruhla.
