The Hokusai Museum Sumida ( Japanese す み だ 北 斎 美術館 , Sumida Hokusai Bijutsukan , English Sumida Hokusai Museum ) is a museum located in the Tokyo district of Sumida , which is dedicated to the painter Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849).

Location, accessibility

The museum is located east of the Sumida River in Kamezawa in Tokyo's Sumida District, just east of the Ryogoku S-Bahn and Subway Station. It is in close proximity to the Edo Tokyo Museum , the Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Hall including the Sumo Museum, the Kyuyasuda Garden and the Yokoamicha Park with the Kanto Earthquake Museum.

The museum is closed on Mondays. Otherwise it is open from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm. Admission to the permanent exhibition is 400 yen and the temporary exhibition is similar.

building

The museum is a new building that opened in 2016. The building was designed by the architect Kazuyo Sejima .

It is right on the road north of the Sobu Main Line track. A conventional sidewalk runs along its south side. The east and west sides are bordered by wider walkways. The north side opens to Midoricho Park.

The building facade has hardly any windows and is angular / angular, so that the appearance of lined up capital letters or stacked boxes is created. The exterior of the building is clad with a matt silver glossy material.

One aim of the design was to make the museum accessible from all sides. It is therefore criss-crossed by passageways at street level that lead to the entrance in the middle of the building.

The museum has four floors accessible to the public. The fourth houses the permanent exhibition dedicated to the painter Hokusai. It includes high-quality replicas of Hokusai's works, including his woodcut cycle “ 36 Views of Mount Fuji ”. A reenactment of his messy domestic situation can also be seen.

The other floors show changing exhibitions or accommodate lecture and assembly halls. A museum shop and a small library can be found on the ground floor.
