Holger Zander

Holger Zander (born May 24, 1943 in Sankt Michaelisdonn ) is a former German canoeist .

Zander began his career with the canoe sport Köln-Mülheim (KKM) in Cologne, from 1965 he started for Rheintreue Düsseldorf . In 1963 he won his first German championship title in a single kayak over 500 meters. In the same year he and Heinz Büker won the bronze medal in a two-man kayak at the World Championships in Jajce. The following year, Zander won the German championship in single kayaks over 500 meters and over 1000 meters. At the 1964 Olympic Games , Zander and Büker won bronze in a pair. In a four-kayak, Zander together with Günter Perleberg , Friedhelm Wentzke and Bernhard Schulze received the silver medal behind the boat from the USSR.

For winning his two medals, he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf on December 11, 1964.

In 1966, like in 1964, Zander won the German championship titles in the single over 500 and over 1000 meters, and he won another title with the 4 x 500 meter relay from Rheintreue Düsseldorf . At the World Championships in East Berlin, he and Heinz Büker won silver in a two-man over 500 meters. In 1967 and 1968 Zander defended the German championship title over 500 meters. Zander won his last international medal with the German 4 x 500 meter relay at the European Championships in Duisburg in 1967, when he received silver behind the Romanian relay together with Heinz Büker, Bernd Guse and Hans Günther . At the 1968 Olympic Games , Zander and Bernhard Schulze reached the finals in a two-man kayak, but only finished ninth and last.

Zander continued his career for a few years, so he won the German championship three times in a row with the Düsseldorf relay from 1970 to 1972, and in 1971 he also won the 10,000 meter single. For the 1972 Olympic Games, Zander could no longer qualify.
