The "G" -series , "G" -classes , or "G" -dijken were a series of cargo ships of the Holland-America Lijn (HAL). The ship class consisted of five ships of the same type of ship that were built by two shipyards .
technology
The basic design of the ships with superstructures three-quarters aft and the conventional loading gear consisting of 20 light cargo booms and two 75-tonne heavy lift booms did not differ fundamentally from contemporary liner carriers . A clear distinguishing feature of the ships were two antenna holders on the front edge of the funnel that were curved upwards and slightly outward over the observation deck . The front edge of the wheelhouse , which protruded beyond the front of the superstructure, was also typical .
The ships, which were over 160 meters long and almost 21 meters wide on frames, had six cargo holds with an intermediate deck. Parts of the hold were designed as a fridge and freezer hold. Another part of the hold could also be used as a sweet oil tank. All ships were powered by two-stroke diesel engines, and three different models were installed. The Gaasterdyk and Grotedyk had Stork Hotlo engines, the Grebbedyk and Gorredyk had MAN diesel engines and the Moerdyk had a somewhat Stork 65 W 85/170 six-cylinder diesel engine with 14,000 hp for 18.5 knots.
The first four ships were identical, the last ship of the series, the Moerdyk , differed in some details from the rest of the series. Its dimensions were slightly larger than the stems and in details, such as the more powerful main engine, were adapted to the sailing area in the Pacific. The Moerdyk was also the last conventional general cargo ship on the Holland-Amerika Lijn.
