The “K” series , “K” class , or “K” -dijken were a series of cargo ships of the Holland-America Lijn (HAL). The ship class consisted of six ships of the same type of ship that were built by three different shipyards .
technology
The basic design of the ships with superstructures amidships and the conventional loading gear made of 5/10 tonne light cargo booms and a 40 tonne heavy lift boom did not differ fundamentally from contemporary liner freighters . The ships, around 140 meters long and 18.80 meters wide, had five cargo holds with an intermediate deck. The upper part of hold 3 directly in front of the deckhouse was designed as a refrigerated and freezer hold. The lower part of cargo hold 4 could also be used as a sweet oil tank. The first two ships were given passenger chambers for twelve passengers, the following ships only had the owner's chamber, in which two passengers could be carried. The built-in Werkspoor-Lught KEBS 689/125 nine-cylinder two-stroke main engines with turbochargers developed 7200 hp and allowed a speed of around 16 knots . Two of the ships, whose Werkspoor-Lught were considered to be very maintenance-intensive, were re-motorized in 1968 with Sulzer engines of the RD series. The last ship in the series, the Katsedyk , differed in some details from the rest of the series. Some of the dimensions were a few centimeters larger than the stems, the front edge of their wheelhouse protruded slightly in the area of the loading posts and their heavy lift boom at 60 tons had a higher capacity than the stems. In addition, the ship received a Stork-Hotlo main engine, which also had 7200 hp.
