from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Holly House is a residential building in the Scottish town of Montrose in the Council Area Angus . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

Holly House was built during the 17th century. In this century Robert Rennald , Provost of Montrose, and the merchant Alexander Dempster of Logie lived in the building. The Provost Doig of Cookston later lived in Holly House. During this period, it was largely rebuilt between 1754 and 1755, with fragments of the original building being incorporated into the new structure. In 1763 his daughter Christian, who was married to MP James Carnegie of Pittarrow, inherited the building, which she lived in until 1820. Later it belonged to a Dr. Stone . Various sections were revised during the 19th century.

description

It is a rear building that is completely covered on the street side by 172-174 High Street . The two-story building is asymmetrical. Its sandstone masonry consists partly of quarry stone and partly of roughly hewn stone. The facades are partially plastered with Harl . The steeply sloping roofs are covered with gray slate. Only the wing facing north is covered with corrugated iron . The well-preserved 18th century interior shows parallels to William Adam's work in the nearby House of Dun . The continuous wood paneling as well as the dining room with its Corinthian pilasters , the cornices and the open fireplace made of black marble should be emphasized .
