Holocentrus is a genus of hussar fish (Holocentrinae)comprising only two species. The two species occur in tropical and subtropical areas of the Atlantic Ocean .

features

The Holocentrus species are 35 to 60 cm long and are predominantly reddish in color, the fins can also be orange or whitish. An angled, wide, white band runs down over the sides of the body under the rear of the hard-radiating section of the dorsal fin. The elongated front part of the soft-rayed section of the dorsal fin is striking. The caudal fin is deeply forked but asymmetrical with a longer upper lobe . The number of gill trap rays on the lower branch of the first gill arch is 15 to 18 (including the rudimentary rays and those in the angle).

Way of life

Both species are nocturnal and hide in caves and under coral sticks during the day. During the day they hunt for crabs, shrimps, other crustaceans, snails and brittle stars over sandy bottoms and seagrass meadows.
