The common hussar ( Holocentrus adscensionis ), also known as the yellowfin squirrel fish, is a fish from the soldier and hussar fish family and is assigned to the hussar fish subfamily . The common hussar lives in the tropical west Atlantic from North Carolina via Bermuda , the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean to Brazil . In the eastern Atlantic it occurs from the coast of Gabon to Angola , also in the central Atlantic at St. Helena , Ascension and the Saint-Peter-and-Saint-Pauls rocks . It lives at depths of no more than 180 meters, usually only up to 30 meters.

features

The basic color of this 45 to 60 centimeter fish is brick red. However, this basic color is usually overlaid by rows of white scales and spots. While the hard-radiating part of the dorsal fin is yellowish in color, the remaining fins are white. The hard-rayed and soft-rayed part of the dorsal fin are almost separated by a deep indentation and only connected by a low membrane. The rear edge of the jaw extends to the rear edge of the eye.

Like other hussar fish, the common hussar can make noise. To do this, muscles are contracted and the swim bladder acts as an acoustic amplifier.

Way of life

The common hussar lives in shallow coral reefs as well as in deeper coastal regions. The nocturnal species hides under corals and in deep crevices during the day, and hunts over sandy areas and seagrass meadows at night. It feeds mainly on crustaceans, as well as other invertebrates and small fish.
