The British geographer Derek Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey mapped it in 1960 using aerial photographs taken by the American Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition . The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1961 after the British composer Gustav Holst (1874-1934).
