The Walton Mountains are an isolated mountain range consisting of three mainly snow-covered massifs on the West Antarctic Alexander I Island . The highest point is Mount McArthur with 1450  m . Starting from Schubert Inlet , they extend south over a length of 40 km.

They were first sighted by the US polar explorer Lincoln Ellsworth during an overflight on November 23, 1935. The resulting aerial photographs were used by Ellsworth's compatriot, the geographer WLG Joerg , for mapping. Further aerial photographs were taken in 1940 by the United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939-1941) and in 1947 by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (1947-1948) under the direction of the US polar explorer Finn Ronne . He named the Mountains after Lieutenant Colonel Robert C. Walton of the United States Marine Corps , who, as an employee of the Office of Naval Research, helped provide a United States Navy ship for Ronne's expedition.
