The Holy Cross Convent Primary School is a Catholic primary school in Windhoek , Namibia with currently almost 500 students. Although the school is under Catholic management, it is open to members of all religious communities . The school defines itself through its multi- ethical , Christian culture and the values of the gospel .

history

The school was founded in 1906 by Hünfeld Oblaten as a girls' school with initially seven pupils and from 1909 it was continued by German Nonnenwerther Franciscan nuns as a “Higher Daughter School”, in 1919 with 125 pupils. Until the 1920s the school developed a good reputation in Windhoek, both academically and culturally.

In 1921 the school was taken over by the Sisters of the Holy Cross and renamed "Heiligkreuz Convent School". With the support of the German government, a swimming pool, a new kitchen and additional classrooms were inaugurated between 1934 and 1937. During the Second World War, the school buildings were used by the South African police.

In 1951 it was recognized by the Namibian Ministry of Education, combined with the renaming to the current name and the introduction of English as the registered language of instruction. In 1954, 364 students attended the school and a new building for the grammar school was inaugurated. Since the 1960s, additional teachers were entrusted with teaching because the number of teaching sisters was no longer sufficient. In 1977, contrary to the then current, politically wanted racial segregation , school access for all sections of the population was allowed by the church school authorities, which led to the cessation of state school support and the exclusion of their students from local sports competitions. However, the loss of government support was made up for by donations.

In the mid-1980s, the school was again recognized by the Ministry of Education, which was connected with renewed state support. Beginning in 1985, the grammar school branch was given up and instead a preschool was introduced, while German-language teaching began to run out. Today, all-day classes are mainly offered for primary school students, German is still a subject in grades 5 to 7.

The school has received strong support from the Catholic Church in Germany since it was founded and is now an institution of the Archdiocese of Windhoek .
