Holy Trinity Church

The Holy Trinity Church is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish town of St Andrews in the Council Area Fife . In 1959 the building was included as an individual monument in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The original Holy Trinity Church was built between 1410 and 1412 as the parish church of St Andrews. In 1433 John Lindsay sent a petition to the Pope. He offered to take over the Holy Trinity Church and fund a canon pen there. This request was refused, also due to the resistance of the regional church officials. During the 15th century the church received its bell tower. His pointed helmet, like the small helmets on the stair towers, was created in the 16th century. Between 1798 and 1800, the Holy Trinity Church was largely rebuilt. Fragments of the original church building were integrated into the new structure. The Scottish architect Robert Balfour was responsible for the design. Jesse Hall revised the building in 1863. Again between 1907 and 1909 the church was rebuilt according to a design by Peter MacGregor Chalmers .

description

The church faces the confluence with Queen's Gardens on North Street ( A918 ). It is designed in the style of late Scottish Neo-Gothic . Originally the bell tower rose from the north-western interior corner of the cruciform church . Today it flanks the western gable end. The nave with side aisles is nine axes wide. The two western pointed arch windows still come from the original church building.

The kneeling statue of James Sharps , Archbishop of St Andrews , made in 1679, the year of death , is made of black and white marble. Corinthian columns flank the sculpture created in the Netherlands.
