Wood brandy
Sawdust brandy is made of wood by means of distillation recovered spirits .
To make wood brandy, wood is boiled with dilute sulfuric acid , which converts the cellulose and hemicelluloses into dextrose and other simple sugars, while lignin is left over. The sugar-containing liquid is, after neutralization of the acid in fermentation brought the thus formed ethanol may then be recovered by distillation.
For this process, the waste liquor from cellulose production was also used in the GDR to produce "wood schnapps" or "sulfite alcohol". Drinking brandy (distillate diluted to drinkable strength) that is obtained by this process is no more dangerous than drinking brandy made from grain ; it usually contains much less fusel oils than this one or even the fruit brandy that is rich in fusel . Nevertheless, the German law on the spirits monopoly prohibits the use of wood spirits for the production of alcoholic beverages . This prohibition arises from the function of the law as a means of agricultural subsidies and not from the state's health care obligations.
The dry distillation of wood used to be used for the production of methanol (wood spirit).
