The name arose from the archaeological findings during excavations: In the outer front of the stone walls, vertical recesses can be observed at a distance of about 60 centimeters to more than one meter. In these were wooden posts that have since passed and can only be detected through the gaps or slots between the sections of the wall front. The wall itself is a construction made of a wooden lattice that was filled with earth or rubble and rubble. The cross members can also protrude from the stone surface.

These masonry are widespread in ramparts and oppida in the Celtic settlement area in Central Europe , but also in Scythian fortifications in the Ukraine.

The post - slot walls are closely related to the Murus-Gallicus walls of western Europe (France and West Germany), which can also be attributed to the Celts . They are also referred to as the Kelheim type, after the late Celtic oppidum finds there on the Michelsberg .

In the oppidum of Manching , a former Murus-Gallicus wall was replaced by a post-slot wall.
