The Wood Museum Murau is located in St. Ruprecht ob Murau (municipality Sankt Georgen am Kreischberg , Murau , Austria). It is dedicated to the historical and traditional side of the subject of wood , but also deals with the current use and significance of wood. The exhibitions are prepared for different interest groups. In addition to its role as a classic museum, the wood museum also serves as a visitor and information center and is the starting point for guided tours in the region, the so-called wood world tours.
history
The origin of the Murau Wood Museum goes back to the private association “Styrian Wood Museum” founded in 1984. The initiative for this came from the forest technician DI Hans Edler. The aim of the association was and is to give the material wood a greater and contemporary meaning in the life of today's people. In 1988 the wood museum moved to its current location in St. Ruprecht ob Murau and was opened with an exhibition area of approx. 600 m². Two years later, the exhibition area was expanded to include the former pigsty and the wagon hut and was now around 800 m². In 1992 a wooden and water playground was built near the museum. Two years later, the next enlargement took place when the exhibition area was increased to 1000 m² through the construction of a modern extension. In the same year the design of the arboretum began . In 1995 the wood museum was part of the Styrian state exhibition . The playhouse belonging to the museum was opened in 1998 and in 2002 the exhibition area in the HolzBauHaus was expanded by 150 m².
structure
The total exhibition area is about 10,000 m² and is divided into the main building with annually changing special exhibitions and the permanent exhibition, the so-called "HolzBauHaus" with annually changing special exhibitions, the forest tower with information on forestry, the wood-water playground for children and the arboretum , the Baumgarten, with 70 tree species.

The implementation of the dormer window in the main building was awarded the Styrian Timber Construction Prize 2013. The exhibition areas in the main building cover four floors. In addition to the exhibition areas, the main entrance to the museum and the cash desk are also located here. The annually changing special exhibitions and the permanent exhibition can be seen in the main building. The permanent exhibition extends over several floors and is divided into the following subject areas:
