Homeworld: Cataclysm is a published in September 2000 real-time strategy of Barking Dog Studios for Windows . It is a sequel to the plot of the computer game Homeworld in the form of a stand-alone add-on. The focus of the plot is no longer the entire people of the Kushan, but the smaller clan of the Kiith Somtaaw, who are primarily looking for their fortune in interstellar asteroid mining after the previously predominant religious aspects of the clan through the return to Hiigara and the destruction of Kharak in have receded into the background.

action

Fifteen years after the arrival on Hiigara, this world is still threatened by the remnants of the Taiidan empire, which was shattered in the civil war, as well as by attacks by Turan privateers who destroyed the Khar-Selim in Homeworld, among other things, and the development and supply of the colonies proved to be the case as extremely difficult. At the beginning of the game, the Kiith Somtaaw helps with his mighty mining ship "Kuun Lan" in the defense of Hiigara against an imperial attack in preparation for further battles. In the following years, the mining ship encounters an ancient biomechanical virus on its journey, which is roused by its discoverers, the Somtaaw, and which is transmitted to other ships in the form of beams of infection and guided missiles. The crew themselves become part of the epidemic and the larger ships can assimilate other ships on their own. “The beast”, the alias for the virus, can think and act independently and collects new information and technologies with every infected ship and develops new strategies against the Kushan, Bentusi and the Taiidan Republic, the former rebels. The life form is spreading explosively across the galaxy, and its overthrow will require the efforts of all Hiigaran and allied fleets, especially since the beast has teamed up with the remnants of the Taiidan Empire and the Turan privateers after their pathetic attempts to take control of the beast to bring failed. The demands on warfare are growing more and more, and accordingly the Kiith Somtaaw also puts ever stronger combat ships into service. Only after the destruction of the beast mother ship with an ancient weapon and the destruction of the NAGGAROK, the origin of the epidemic, with the help of the Bentusi, can the deadly infection be contained and finally completely eradicated.

Gameplay

The Homeworld: Cataclysm campaign consists of 17 single player missions. Again the player takes command of a fleet, this time that of the Kiith Somtaaw, and learns a bit more about the Bentusi and the galaxy itself. Instead of the mother ship, the KUUN LAN, an interstellar mining base ship, is now the center of the fleet. It is about three to four times the size of a conventional carrier ship and, in the course of the game, is converted from a fairly simple civilian mining ship into a weapon-rigged combat and base ship that builds an improvised fleet of powerful ships with the help of constant research and the adoption of foreign technologies. These ships tend to be significantly more multifunctional than those of the base game Homeworld . Taiidan and Kushan also use the ships from the first part in their combat fleets, which, however, are not required for playing Cataclysm . You can "only" use the Somtaaw to play, in multiplayer you can choose between the Somtaaw and the beast.

development

The game took over the graphics engine of the main game and added some new light and explosion effects, added 18 new ship types and 25 new technologies. In addition, detailed improvements were made. A time-lapse function accelerates reconnaissance flights and repair work, a waypoint system enables patrol routes to be defined and greater distances can be covered via hyperspace jump gates. The development work was completed on August 30, 2000.

Homeworld: Cataclysm received positive reviews ( Metacritic : 89 out of 100).

“As with Homeworld, the look, atmosphere and depth of play of Cataclysm are simply excellent; only one negative point remains: Why couldn't the developers bring themselves to treat their fascinating space epic to proper cutscenes? "

Homeworld: Emergence

The game was re-released on GOG by Gearbox in 2017 and is available there. The name Homeworld: Cataclysm had to be changed to Homeworld: Emergence as Cataclysm is now a registered trademark of Blizzard Entertainment . Except for the name change you get the game as you know it from the year 2000.
