Hommel is an impact crater to the south of the lunar front , southeast of Pitiscus and southwest of Vlacq . The crater rim is heavily eroded and overlaid by secondary craters several times.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the German theologian, mathematician and astronomer Johannes Hommel .
