Hommingberger cheetah trout

Hommingberger Gepardenforelle is a search term with which the computer magazine c't announced a search engine optimization competition in April 2005 . The aim was to get the best position in the search engines Google , Yahoo , MSN and Seekport on the two deadlines of May 15 and December 15, 2005 at 11:00 am . This should provide insight into the ranking mechanisms of the search services and current optimization trends - legitimate as well as undesirable.

The competition

The term “Hommingberger cheetah trout” was chosen because there is neither a place in Hommingberg nor a cheetah trout and so the search engines did not return any hits before the start of the competition. Models were the English term Nigritude ultramarine and the experimental setup of schnitzel with potato salad .

The first announcement was made by the editors of heise- Verlag on April 16, 2005 at around 1 p.m. and was soon commented on by several weblogs. The site set up by the heise editorial team was out of competition. Heise published a report with an interim balance on each of the two reference dates.

Strategies

The strategies for winning the competition were many. So were blogs and Web sites built, links exchanged, published press releases and a poetry slam contest invented. Websites with high quality content were particularly successful. Established websites that were able to profitably use their already high level of awareness were among the first places. Others posted stories (necessarily made up) on their websites, including illustrated sightings, breeding successes , videos and webcams. Web pages with the target terms in the domain were preferred by search engines. Many participants have focused on exchanging links and backlinks . That was a moderately successful strategy unless there was a lot of engaging content. The attention of the media and internet users had become so important for some companies that even paid advertisements appeared in Google Adwords and others offered money for backlinks.

Just a few days after the start of the competition, the number of hits returned by the search engines for the search term “Hommingberger Gepardenforelle” increased sharply. From an initial 100,000 hits after a few days, Google delivered up to 3.8 million hits in the course of the competition:

These values ​​were determined around 1 p.m., as the competition started at this time. It should be noted, however, that these hit numbers are often imprecise, especially when the numbers are large. As of April 25, 2005, the Hommingberger cheetah trout had more hits than the search terms trout (520,000 hits on Google) or cheetah (322,000 hits). In the representation of the number of search results as a percentage of the maximum numbers, a comparison of the search engines with each other is possible.

Yahoo has been using Bing's search since 2009, which has brought the number of results the same.
