gay-web was a voluntary Internet portal that provided information about the gay and lesbian scene - especially about homosexual associations and initiatives - in German cities.

In the 1990s, there were information pages for gays on the Internet, mainly at non-meaningful Internet addresses (for example on sub-pages of student websites). Since they were not tracked by search engines , they were difficult to find. So the idea arose to create a uniform address convention for such sites . The domain gay-web.de was activated on August 24, 1996. The URL was made up of the city name and gay-web.de . There were also portals for federal states .

In addition, a lot of supraregional information could be found, such as the annual, Germany-wide CSD's , cinema programs, current news, various magazines, as well as culture. Gay-web also offered its own personal ad portal, which was used very intensively, especially in metropolitan areas. The aim of gay-web.de was to provide information on gay and lesbian offers in the cities and regions of this country as well as on a wide variety of topics such as culture, coming out, HIV and AIDS, among others, quickly and easily.

The portal was operated by the non-profit association gay-web eV based in Hamburg . The collaboration was voluntary, and the entire project was never commercial. More than 70 cities were already integrated into the network in 2005. The internet presence is financed by sponsors and advertising , including banner advertising .

According to its own information, the entire gay web network had 6.6 million page views in May 2009.

In September 2006, the Homowiki project was started, which is also supposed to include relevant content that is neglected or considered irrelevant in Wikipedia due to the predominantly heterosexual perspective.

On April 26, 2013 it was decided to dissolve the association. Most city pages as well as the federal page were switched off on January 1, 2014. The domains gay-web.de , on which seven pages are still accessible as of January 2014, and homowiki.de currently remain under a trustee for the dissolved association.
