Mauldin is an American city in Greenville County in northwestern South Carolina . It has about 15,000 inhabitants (status: 2000 census) on an area of 22.3 km² and is 290 m above sea level. NN on the Piedmont Plateau.
Mauldin is located south of Greenville about halfway between the cities of Atlanta, Georgia and Charlotte, North Carolina . The city is connected to Interstate Highways I-85 , I-185 and I-385 .
history
Until the middle of the 18th century, the area around Mauldin was a popular hunting ground for the Cherokees . An Indian village was located near today's city.
In 1784 Benjamin Griffith was one of the first settlers there to receive land with an area of around 40 hectares. He settled there with his family in what is now the urban area of Mauldin.
The name of the city goes back to the former lieutenant governor of South Carolina, WL Mauldin. He had campaigned for the construction of a station for the Greenville Laurens Railroad Company in the small village "Butlers Crossroads" that had been created. The station got his name until the place was renamed after him in his honor.
In 1957, the citizens of Mauldin voted against naturalization in the city of Greenville .
Demographics
According to the 2000 census, 15,224 people live in Mauldin. These are divided between 6131 households and 4242 families. With a ratio of 100 women to 93.2 men, there is a slight surplus of women.
The population is made up of 74% white , 21% black , 3% Latin American, 2% Asian and less than 1% Native American (rounded off) . One percent of the population comes from none of these groups and another percent from more than one. Regardless of this grouping, almost 3% of the population described themselves as Americans of Latin American origin.
In terms of age, the city is divided into 25% under 18-year-olds, 8% between 18 and 24, 34% between 25 and 44, 24% between 45 and 64 and 9% older than 64. The average age is 35 years.
