A Hong Kong derrick barge or Hong Kong crane barge is a work ship with a derrick crane , which is used in the waters of Hong Kong for loading and unloading cargo ships, in particular container ships , “in the stream”.

Structure and technology

Modern Hong Kong container barges, around 50 meters long and 25 meters wide, have a load capacity of around 4,500 tons, a container capacity of almost 200 TEU and are often equipped with their own propulsion. In addition to their derrick- designed cargo boom, they often also have living quarters in the superstructures, as the owners of smaller crane barge companies usually live with their families on the crane barge.

history

The Hong Kong Derrick Barge evolved from the sampans with which cargo handling on the river was carried out in the Crown Colony with its few port places from ancient times. With increasing amounts of cargo, larger packages and finally the introduction of the container, the sampan owners adapted and provided their vehicles with stronger loading booms, which ultimately led to the development of the typical Hong Kong container lighter with derrick.
