The Honokōhau Settlement is an archaeological site in the Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park on the island of Hawaii .
Due to its suitability as a landing site for canoes and fish ponds , Honokōhau was significant for the settlement history of Hawai'i . The site contains historical houses, temples ( heiau ), a papa hōlua ( hōlua ) to slide over the lava ceilings and a few petroglyphs .
On December 29, 1962, the Honokohau Settlement became a National Historic Landmark . On November 10, 1978, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places as a Historic District .
