The initiative was started in October 2014 as a reaction to the group " Hooligans against Salafists " (HoGeSa), whose members had fought street battles with the police in Cologne, originally under the same abbreviation HoGeSa. She offered “German correction” in a “black-white-red rune look” and advertised the book “Die Endlösung der Dudenfrage”.

The group describes itself as an "Initiative against legal spelling" and explains

"Right spelling (die): The so-called right spelling is an increasingly prevalent form of verbal brutality - especially in social networks. It is characterized by inhuman content, sometimes excessive national pride, acceptance of violence and insults. It is not uncommon for these features to be accompanied by a disregard of all common grammar rules. Right spelling can be found in parts in all politically extreme camps, but preferably in the right spectrum. It is an overarching social phenomenon and a growing problem. "

In the form of posts and comments, the group impales nationalist statements from members of the AfD party , the “HoGeSa” group and similar nationalist groups on various platforms in the social media sector. In her posts she plays with catchphrases, idioms and symbols of the nationalist and right-wing extremist direction, for example "Just because I'm a Nazi, I'm far from a patriot" or "Germany is awakening: Nazis out!"

The members of the group keep their identities secret for security reasons. The founding members should be an educationalist and a communication designer. They describe themselves as “completely 'normal' people from the middle of society with children and work”; some group members have a migration background. In doing so, they claim to be impartial and want to encourage objective discussion. Since, in their opinion, state funding would jeopardize their independence, they ended the collaboration with the Amadeu Antonio Foundation and the non-profit UG Der goldene Aluhut that began in 2015 .

Hooligans Gegen Satzbau is jointly responsible for the Stay Behind Foundation , which among other things has distributed photos of satirical advertising posters about the AfD . After the AfD Hamburg called on the information portal Neutrale Schulen Hamburg to report violations of the principle of neutrality by teachers, Hooligans Gegen Satzbau reported on pizza orders and other satirical actions against the AfD portal. In addition, the initiative with the Stay Behind Foundation started the website melderegister.de, on which teachers should be reported for right-wing populist statements that endanger democracy. However, the organization made it clear that this was a satirical action and that no real reports were collected.

resonance

HoGeSatzbau received a lot of support, but was also criticized. The arguments should come first, not the spelling. The group members contradicted: "If you translate and correct the poorly formulated and grammatically incorrect postings, but the content is still not available, only humor often helps."

"Hook shoes" of the crowdfunding campaign from 2016

A crowdfunding campaign called “Krautpfanding” in spring 2016 was intended to professionalize the work of the active participants . The aim was to distribute one or two jobs subject to social security contributions between the three members and to cover material and project costs. 40,000 euros were achieved. Donors between 33 and 1945 euros were rewarded with “thank you”, including HoGeSatzbau ear studs, flags and shoes (“hook shoes”). A video with supporter statements was also published.

In September 2016 they were awarded the Audience Prize of the Smart Hero Awards , which are jointly presented by Facebook , the Digital Opportunities Foundation and the Federal Ministry for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth . They used the award ceremony to remind Facebook of their obligation to deal with the growing hate culture on the Internet. Facebook would not recognize many hateful comments as such. Your initiative might be redundant if Facebook took action. They did not accept the prize money of 2,500 euros, but gave it to the runner-up Enough is Enough.

Hooligans Gegen Satzbau currently has around 180,000 Facebook and 19,000 Twitter followers. (As of 07/2020) Your homepage has around 10,000 website visitors every day.

Hildmann affair

In July 2020, the cookbook author Attila Hildmann , who was controversially discussed during the COVID-19 pandemic, offered a bounty on the administrators of HoGeSatzbau and other public figures (including against the Green politician Volker Beck ) in a public Telegram group . Bonuses would be paid out to those who can give Hildmann information about personal and address details of the people. HoGeSatzbau responded by editing the photo of a neo-Nazi and member of the Aryan Circle Germany , portraying him as an anti-fascist and, as the administrator of HoGeSatzbau, issuing what Hildmann believed and spread through his channels. For the payment of the bounty, HoGeSatzbau faked an informant with the aim of donating the money to the Exit Germany organization - but Hildmann ignored their messages and demands. In the written explanation of the fake, HoGeSatzbau explained that the campaign aimed to show how easy it is to spread false reports and how easy it is to convince some people with such bogus reports and information.
