The Hopkins Observatory (German Hopkins Observatory ) is an astronomical observatory that belongs to and is operated by Williams College in Williamstown , Massachusetts ( USA ). It was built by Albert Hopkins in 1838. The college claims that it is the oldest observatory in the United States.
The observatory dates back to 1834 when Prof. Albert Hopkins traveled to England to organize astronomical equipment. His students built the observatory 1836-1838 in the middle of the courtyard. It was relocated once in 1908 and relocated to its current location in 1961, where it now serves as a planetarium . The current building still contains the original transit , regulator with mercury-compensated pendulum and rule.
In 1852 the Alvan Clark Company ( Cambridge , Massachusetts) built a 7-inch refractor , which was restored to mark the centenary of the observatory. The planetarium was installed in 1963 and named in memory of Willis Milham, Professor of Astronomy 1901–1942. The side rooms of the observatory became the Mehlin Museum of Astronomy in memory of Theodore Mehlin, professor of astronomy 1942–1971.
