Hoplosternum is a genus from the family of callichthyidae (Callichthyidae).
features
The species of the genus Hoplosternum, which are widespread in South American waters, differ greatly in their external appearance from the usual image of the Corydoras armored catfish. They have an almost cylindrical body and a straight and only slightly incised caudal fin. The Hoplosterna species differ from the members of the closely related genus Callichthys in that the dorsal bone plates are firmly connected and the side plates are firmly connected between the dorsal fin and the adipose fin .
The members of the genus Hoplosternum , unlike most representatives of the armored and callous catfish , build foam nests in which the females lay the fertilized eggs.
