Hori (Bible)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hori is the name of two people in the Old Testament .

etymology

The Hebrew name Hori appears in the Masoretic text as חֹרִי ḥorî for the son of Lotan ( Gen 36.22  EU and 1 Chr 1.39  EU ) and חֹורִי ḥôrî for the father Schafat, mentioned only in Num 13.5  EU . The Horites are always written חֹרִי ḥorî . The derivation of the name is unclear. It is probably only secondarily a personal name and primarily a place or collective name. Usually the name is associated with the noun חֹור ḥôr "cave" and translated as "cave dwellers". Alternatively, the meaning "noble / free (born) he" is given. Horst Seebass favors the latter .

Hori, son of Lotan

In the descendants list of Esau in Gen 36  EU , Hori is a son of Lotan and grandson of Seïr ( Gen 36,22  EU ). A brother named Hemam is named. Seïr is introduced in Gen 36.20  EU without reference to Esau. Hori is mentioned again in 1 Chr 1.39  EU .

Hori, father of Schafat

In Num 13.5  EU , Hori is mentioned as the father of the scout Shafat of the Simeon tribe .
